Warning! Spoilers ahead!
When i was a kid i loved the Transformers comics and the animated TV series, and i still do. And when i first heard about the movie i was really excited. Rumors even had it that Steven Spielberg was gonna direct the movie. Later one i got to know that Michael Bay was the director and that Steven Spielberg was just one of the producers. Not long after that i saw the first pictures of the new transformer designs and i knew already back then that something was horribly wrong.
Today i saw the movie for the first time, and as a Transformers fan i was really disappointed.
The first thing we all noticed were the heavy redesigns. And the transformers were redesigned for purposes of realism and focus on an alien aspect of the Transformer race. First of all its science fiction, giant robots have never been a part reality so far. And the new designs has more human features than the original designs. For example, eye lids. The transformers were more alien/less human when they did not have eye lids. And Optimus prime never had a mouth. But one of the main design problems is that none of the transformers look like the original designs, except from one, Optimus Prime. The transformers we know and love is not featured in this movie. The Megatron we know do not look like an orc from Lord of the rings. And the ability to imitate human pilots and drivers? Michael Bay just adds too much to the original transformer universe. And i already knew that transformers could transform into other machines by scanning them first. But transferring their mind into another machine and THEN take control over it?! (Watch the tunnel scene where Mikaela complains about Bumblebee being a old Camaro). And when he comes back the driver of the new car is gone?
As an example, look at these pictures:

But surprisingly the redesign is not the main reason why this movie is bad. The plot, the acting and the directing is also to blame. There is certain requirements that has to be achieved when you make a movie based on a popular story. The main problem is that the movie focuses more on the two main characters than the real stars, the transformers.
Wikipedia has this to say:
The Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt liked "how a teen plot line gets tied in to the end of the world" & Daily Herald's Matt Arado was annoyed that "the Transformers are little more than supporting players"
The acting is not always especially good and a lot of the acting in this movie is not credible at all. Not all of it but a lot of it.
The plot itself is fairly Ok but the way the story builds up is not. Michael Bay might have tried to make this film more realistic than earlier transformer stories, but he does not succeed 100%. For example, as far as i know the American government would never go public with classified battlefield news instantly after it occurred. Also there is a fire in the ice cave and Megatron seemed to have been frozen for quite some time. And the thing with the glasses of Sam's great great grandfather? Its not very credible even as science fiction if you ask me.
But the directing by Michael Bay is without doubt the main reason why this movie is a failure as a movie based on the transformers. Michael Bay focuses a lot on the human characters and almost nothing on the transformers as characters. They do not have the personality from the original stories that makes them who they are. And this is a huge problem for us fans. Because we who have read the comics and seen the TV series, we are used to have transformers in the list of main characters. The camera moves a lot during battles and other action scenes and that often makes it hard to get whats going on, and sometimes it seems like the camera is being tossed around. And at some points the camera is being moved away from a transformer and then back after it has transformed. And Michael Bay is not very good with jokes, in several scenes in this movie there are jokes that completely ruins the mood of those scenes.
The music is Ok BUT in one scene (the same scene where Bumblebee mind transfers with another car) there is music from Kill Bill, and it is not music that sounds like it is from Kill Bill, it IS the same music used in Kill Bill.
The ONLY thing that really is good with this movie is the special effects and the animation.
Everything else is below average, at least that is my opinion.
I know that everyone do not agree with me. But i have always loved robots and the transformers is the first memory i have of science fictional robots. And that is why i had high expectations for this movie. And almost everything i love about the transformers was not included in this movie.
And now i finally understand why so many people think that Michael Bay should stop making movies.
On that i would like to add this Wikipedia facts about Michael Bay:
Critics have attacked Bay for a brash, shaky quick-cut editorial and directing style that many feel emphasizes superficial dramatization and pointless action.
And remember people, do not mix Michael Bays version of transformers with the real thing.
